A Brief History...
Our country's history, over the past 200 years, includes European immigrants coming to this land of providence and freedom.
Our story begins in Aberdeen, Scotland when John Connon answered an ad in a trade magazine for a job with a seed company in Hamilton, Ontario.
Through trials and change, through both World Wars and economic downturn, the company struggled and survived even if it meant conducting their business from their basement in the 1930's. Connon Nuseries has always been a multifaceted company, even in those years.
Mr. Cornelius Vanderkruk immigrated from the Netherlands on a long complicated journey here to Canada. The job awaiting him here was lost due to his delayed journey and his travels brought him to Connon Nurseries where he then worked for Major Connon. He was soon appointed General Manager. He purchased shares in the company and became partners. In 1958, he bought the remaining shares from the business and became the sole owner of Connon Nurseries.
With constant improvements and opportunity for international trade, Connon Nurseries doubled their volumn every year during the 1970's. They purchases land in Waterdown and later on Highway #5, just west of Waterdown. However, through prosperous times there were also hardships, severe wind storms demolishing houses and garden centres and fires that destroyed buildings and stores.
1986 the three brothers, Neil, Art and Cor, decided to seperate the business into three seperate companies. They are now each involved in their own production and sales. Connon Nurseries today looks much different than the original company of 1906. The owners continue to be leaders in the industry. Their firm faith in God and the rich foundation of innovation and achievement upon which they have previously built, will continue to lead and guide the Vanderkruk family throughout the years ahead.*
